What a roofing quote should list, line by line

Dark standing seam roofs under an overcast sky

If the underlayment and the flashing are not named, they are not included.

A one-line quote is not a price. It is an opening position. A proper quote lets you compare two roofers without phoning either of them.

The measurements

Area in squares, pitch for each slope, and the length of every ridge, hip, valley and eave. If these are missing, the number was guessed from the driveway.

The materials

Shingle line and colour, underlayment type, how far the ice barrier runs up from the eaves, and what metal the flashing is made of.

The exclusions

Every quote excludes something, most often rotten decking. A good one says what it costs per sheet if it is found.
