When cedar is worth it
Materials
5 min read

A cedar roof asks more of its owner. Here is what it gives back.
Cedar is the only common roofing material that looks better at fifteen years than it did at one. It is also the only one that needs you to care.
What it needs
Air on both sides, which means skip sheathing or a ventilating underlay, and a wash every few years to keep moss from holding water against the wood.
What it gives
Thirty to forty years, a roof that moves with the house rather than cracking, and a colour no factory has managed to copy.
When to say no
Under heavy tree cover, on a low pitch, or on any house whose owner does not want to think about the roof again. There is no shame in steel.
